Book Talk: The Young Elites

In this post we will be looking at a brief spoiler free book review of the Young Elites By Marie Lu.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever, which has left her with markings. Missing one eye and hair the colour of silver she is looked down upon. Markings are not the only things that the survivors are left with. Rumours of strange supernatural powers are found in the malfetto children. Her father believes she is ruining the family name with her strange markings and wants nothing more than to get rid of her.

Adelina is forced to run away in the middle of the night or else her father is going to sell her to be another man’s wife. She doesn't get very far before her father discovers she's left and tracks her down. Filled with rage, hurt and terror Adelina conjures an illusion of black towering shapes immerse from the ground. In complete shock her father turns to run blindly, but he collides with her horse and falls back but the horse is frightened and accidentally tramples on him. In desperation Adelina continues on foot but is soon caught by Inquisitors and convicted of murder.

Weeks pass yet Adelina remains locked up in a dungeon. With no trial she is sentence to be burnt at the stake. Just as the dry wood is set alight at her feet Adelina reaches deep within her mind and grasps onto threads of energy, and just like that the clouds turn black then scatter into a million locusts. Something is not right with them, its as if they dissolve into nothing. Then Adelina realises that they are just illusions. But illusions won’t save her as the fire is almost burning her. Then at the last minute she is saved by strange figures wearing blue hoods and slivers masks.

Adelina soon finds out that she has been rescued by the Dagger Society and if she wants to survive she needs to prove herself a worthy Young Elite. This novel tells a story of revenge, betrayal and love and is sure to have you on the edge of your seats.

After reading Marie Lu’s first trilogy I was left with high hopes, unfortunately this novel was not as good a Marie’s first as I had a difficult time trying to picture what all these characters looked like with all the different hair colours and skin tones. In saying that I still really enjoyed the storyline and plot twists and I am highly anticipating the next book.

  1. I don't know if I would read it. Purely for the fact that I am SUPER! squeamish and it sounds a bit dark and frightening.
It kind of reminded me of the inheritance cycle. That said, I have only read the first book and a bit of the second, but I plan on finishing them.;D
